Zero hour contracts

16.08.13

According to a recent survey, an estimated one in five employers in the UK has at least one member of staff on a zero-hour contract.

The survey, conducted by The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, approximates that the number of zero-hour contract workers could be around four times higher than the statistics obtained by The Office of National Statistics (ONS).

Retailers such as Domino's, Burger King and Sports Direct are known to have employees on zero-hour contracts. The popular chain of pubs, JD Wetherspoon, has 80% of its staff on zero-hour contracts.

The surprisingly high number of zero-hour contract workers has put the government's unemployment figures into doubt. The latest ONS report showed a 57,000 fall in unemployment for the months March, April & May.

Zero-hour employees run the risk of working little or no hours, resulting in a lack of income.
