Yahoo! says no working from home

25.02.13

The CEO of Yahoo! has come under fire after she sent a memo to all employees revealing that they can no long work remotely from home.

Marissa Mayer, formerly of Google, was made head of the company in July last year in a bid to boost the brand. Yahoo! currently employs around 11,500 around the globe, and with many of the company's employees living several hours from the nearest office, this news is bound to anger a lot of staff.

Any 'remote' Yahoo! employees must now report to their nearest Yahoo! office for work on 1st June. Many campaigners for flexibility in the workplace have criticised Mayer's decision, and the decision has been described as 'a step backwards'.

Criticism has also been voiced by Sir Richard Branson, who described the decision as 'perplexing' and 'a backwards step' in his blog. He went on to say that remote working is easier and more effective than ever due to advances in technology and communications.

Sole trading is arguably the best way to embrace flexible working. Working from home may not be seen as the way forward for Marissa Mayer and Yahoo!, but many companies and organisations are choosing to use sole traders over employees in this current economy.

Becoming self-employed ensures full flexibility and control over the way you work. With Consort, you are a sole trader. You retain your self-employed status whilst not having to worry about running your own limited company. Click here to register.
