Website tries to trick contractors
23.01.14
The 31st January Self-Assessment deadline (for income earned between 6th April 2012 to 5th April 2013) is fast approaching, and one website seems to be trying to take advantage of the last-minute rush by creating a website which appears to be remarkably similar to HMRC's.
TaxRewardGateway.com have paid Google a fee to place an ad at the top of the screen when a user searches terms like: 'HMRC', 'self-assessment' and 'tax return'. This means many have fallen victim to their trap.
The website makes the tax payer believe that they're paying any owed tax, but in fact, they're only paying for services which are otherwise free on the HMRC's own website.
Consort's partners Taxback.com filed 322,000 tax returns last year, so if you are having troubles filing your tax return, we recommend using Taxback.com. They can complete your tax return on your behalf for a reduced fee of £110 (usual price £250).
