Twice as many taxpayers investigated
22.05.14
Just under twice as many taxpayers have been investigated in the past year, according to figures released by the Daily Telegraph last week.
There were 237,215 self-assessment inquiries last tax year, compared with approximately 119,000 in 2011-12.
HMRC seem to be holding no punches, following up on their promise to claw back some of the huge amounts of tax that is lost every year - an estimated £35bn.
It is feared that the increase of investigations has lead to many taxpayers who've made genuine, innocent errors are being targeted by HMRC – teachers, lawyers and doctors are all thought to have been targeted.
HMRC have also hired a further 200 investigators, meaning they now employ over 1,600 of them.
