Tax deadline extended for some

05.02.14

The self-assessment tax deadline passed on Friday (31st January), meaning that anybody who is yet to file theirs will receive an automatic £100 fine from Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs (HMRC).

However, the deadline has been extended until the 15th of February if you signed up for HMRC's online self-assessment service or you lost your username/password between the dates of the 21st and 31st of January. This only applies to those who had received a Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) prior to the 21st January.

In a gesture of goodwill, HMRC have also announced that the self-assessment deadline will be extended for any victims of the severe flooding in Somerset, where some small businesses and homes have been affected since Christmas.

HMRC have said some victims could see the deadline 'extended by months', although each case will be assessed individually.

If you have missed the deadline, Consort would like to insist that you file your tax return as soon as possible to avoid any further fines. Our partners Taxback.com can assist you and file your tax return on your behalf for a reduced fee of £110 (normal price £250). Click here for more information.
