Tax break for married couples
08.07.13
A proposed tax break for some married couples is to be brought forward by the coalition government.
First announced in 2010, the changes would benefit married couples in which either the husband or wife is unemployed, but their partner has an income of £41,451 or less. The spouse who does not work will be able to transfer part of their annual tax-free allowance to their other half.
Inevitably, the policy has been criticised by other parties. The Liberal Democrats claim it discriminates against anyone couples who aren't married.
"At a time when the Government's failed economic policies mean living standards are falling, we should be helping all families and not just some," said Catherine McKinnell, Shadow Treasury minister.
"Millions of people who are separated, widowed or divorced, as well as married couples where both partners work and use all their personal allowance, won't get any help from this out-of-touch policy"
The plans are due to be fast-tracked and George Osborne will likely reveal more in the 2013 Autumn Statement.
