Tax Parity Day
25.09.13
Today is 'Tax Parity Day' – a long-awaited protest which plans to showcase how a reduction in tax for restaurants, pubs and breweries will increase consumer spending.
Organised by the VAT club, a rumoured 15,000 outlets are thought to be taking part. Some of the businesses involved include JD Wetherspoon, Subway and Pizza Hut.
You'll find food and drink prices slashed by 7.5%, designed to prove the positive effect of cutting the VAT rate in the hospitality sector. The current rate is 20% but campaigners are looking to reduce it to just 5%.
The protest is led by French businessman and VAT campaigner Jacques Borel, who recently said: "A reduction in the level of VAT on a long-term basis will generate growth and create jobs in the important leisure and hospitality sector."
