Self-employed go to Glastonbury!

03.07.14

The BBC sent approximately 300 staff and freelancers to last weekend's Glastonbury festival, a considerable amount more than they sent to the month-long World Cup in Brazil.

Self-employed professionals are commonly used by the BBC, and this year saw much-improved coverage of the 44-year-old contemporary music festival thanks to the increase in numbers. There were approximately 50 hours of radio and 30 hours of television footage broadcasted.

"Broadcasting comprehensive, high-quality coverage of major cultural events requires this level of resource," said a BBC spokesperson.

"Whilst we are working hard to ensure we are being as efficient as possible, we will not compromise the quality of our output and we have been robust in scrutinising our plans and minimising costs."

Self-employment is on the rise and it is a good way for a company, in this case the BBC, to acquire the services of high-quality professionals without the expense of employing them.
