Paperless self assessment

Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs (HMRC) are considering turning the self-assessment process into a completely paperless one.

This would result in contractors receiving any HMRC communications electronically, rather than by post.

It is still undecided whether HMRC will go ahead with the plans, as a high number of people still file their return the 'traditional' way. According to HMRC, 9.61 million self assessment tax returns were submitted before the final deadline for the 2011/12 tax year (31st January 2013). 1.68 million of those were sent on paper, compared with 7.93 million electronically.

The consultation closes on 27th December.

If you are yet to submit your tax return for the 2012/13 tax year, the final deadline for online submission is the 31st January 2014.
