Over-50s behind contractor rise
11.04.14
Recent statistics released by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) show that the number of self-employed people over the age of 50 has risen considerably.
In fact, since the start of the recession in 2008, the number of self-employed individuals in the UK has surged, and workers aged 50 or over account for more than 70% of the increase. Around a third of those are aged 65 or older.
Self-employed contractors enjoy more freedom than most employees, which could be the reason why many experienced workers have turned to self-employment over the past five or six years.
