Over 500,000 submit on final day

04.02.13

The traditional panic of contractors, freelancers and small businesses submitting their online tax return continued as over half a million people filed theirs on deadline day (Thursday 31st January), according to HMRC.

A respectable 9.61m people (93%) managed to submit their tax return on time, whether it was online or by post, the latter of which the deadline was 31st October 2012. However, this still means that 730,000 failed to meet the deadline, but that is a considerable amount less than the 850,000 who failed to submit theirs last year.

Online submission seems to be much more favourable nowadays, possibly due to its simplicity compared to the traditional method, plus the extra few months you have to submit. According to HMRC's statistics, less than one in five submit their tax return in 'paper-form'.

If you have missed the deadline and are faced with filing late then try Taxback.com, who specialise in tax returns and rebates. When you come to submitting your 2012/13 tax return, remember that contractors using Consort can take advantage of a preferred rate for Taxback.com's tax return service - £110 (usual price £250).
