Online tax return: Final reminder

08.01.13

Happy New Year! We are now a week into 2013 and if you haven't done so already, you are leaving it very late to get your online self-assessment tax return completed for the 2011-12 financial year.

If this is your first time completing your return online, you'll first need to sign up for HMRC's Online Services. For this you will require either your Unique Taxpayers Reference (UTR) or your National Insurance number, as well as your postcode.

After setting up online, you will receive an 'Activation Code' by post. According to HMRC's website, this can take up to a week to receive if you're living in the UK, or longer if you're living outside.

If you have filed online before, just complete the same process as you have done previously.

Don't leave it until the last minute, or you risk an automatic fine of £100 if you submit your return after the 31st January deadline. Remember, you're submitting your tax return for any money received between the 6th April 2011 and 5th April 2012.

According to Freelance Advisor, there was a 40% increase in people completing their tax returns on Christmas Day – a total number of 1,548.

If you are having problems submitting your tax return, try taxback.com, who have wealth of experience and tax advisers who can get you back on track and submit your return for you. By being a self-employed contractor with Consort, you can take advantage of this service for a reduced rate of £110 (usual price £250). Click here for more details.
