16.04.13

An increase in the National Minimum Wage was announced yesterday, rising by 12p to £6.31 for adults aged 21 and over.

Persons between the ages of 18 and 20 will see an increase of 5p to £5.03, where as 16-17 year-olds will benefit from a rise of 4p to £3.72. Surprisingly, even the pay rate of apprentices will be increased, rising to £2.68 from £2.65.

The National Minimum Wage was introduced by the Labour government in 1999.

Many businesses have slammed the decision to increase the minimum wage at a time when the economy is at a level of uncertainty. The wage increases are set to come into effect on 1st October 2013.
