HS2 phase two unveiled

28.01.13

The government has today unveiled the details for the second phase of the controversial plans for a high speed rail network to be built in Britain.

The huge overhaul of the rail network is going to cost the taxpayer £32bn, and is scheduled to be completed in 2033. The first phase links London and Birmingham with a train line which will accommodate trains capable of speeds of up to 250mph.

Phase two continues with plans for lines north of Birmingham, with two branches heading to Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield and Toton (outside Nottingham). HS2 will almost half some journey times – Manchester to London will take one hour and eight minutes, exactly an hour quicker than the current journey time.

However, the scheme has come under scrutiny due to its cost, its timescale and the disruption that it will cause to towns and villages near to the proposed route.

If the plans do get the go ahead, it will come as good news for contractors as possible travelling times could be cut drastically, meaning a lot more flexibility over which contracts to accept.

By being a self-employed contractor with Consort, you are able to offset any work-related expenses against your income to reduce your tax bill at the end of the tax year. This includes any travelling to/from your work, any books, courses or a home office needed for work.
