HMRC to use social media?

17.01.14

Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs (HMRC) is considering using social media to contact Self-Assessment tax payers with reminders in the build up to deadlines.

The estimated 10 million people who use the Self-Assessment method to pay their income tax currently receive deadline reminders and any penalty notices through the post.

HMRC hope to start sending these sorts of alerts electronically as part of their new 'Digital Strategy', but if the plans go ahead you'll have to 'opt in' to the service.

Listed in the new proposals in the consultation document, it says: 'HMRC is exploring how social media accounts could potentially be used as part of the new electronic service.'

The Self-Assessment tax return deadline is fast-approaching for income received 6th April 2012 to 5th April 2013. All submissions must be made before the 31st January 2014, or you will receive an automatic £100 fine.

If you still haven't filed, we'd like to point you in the direction of our partners Taxback.com, who will complete yours on your behalf for a reduced fee of £110 (usual price £250). Click here for more information or use the free tax calculator app on our Facebook page.
