HMRC target direct sellers

14.06.13

The deadline passed last week for any 'direct sellers' wishing to contact HMRC in regards to non-declared income.

HMRC were chasing up direct sellers such as Avon ladies, Ann Summers' party hosts and Betterware representatives for unpaid tax, following up on an opportunity offered by the taxman in February for anybody generating an income through that type of work to settle any outstanding tax.

Around 2,000 letters were sent out stating:

"We know there are around 400,000 people involved in direct selling, and we believe the vast majority are paying the right amount of tax.

"We are currently identifying direct sellers who have not taken advantage of the campaign and will be cross-checking the commission payment information we hold with your income tax records.

"We have issued letters like this one to 2,000 people, and where there are discrepancies we will be identifying cases for further action, including investigation."

Recipients of the letter had until last Friday to respond.
