14.04.14

South Lakeland in Cumbria has a higher percentage of contractors than anywhere else in the country, according to research conducted by the Professional Representation Network.

In the UK, self-employed contractors make up for approximately 9.5% of the population, but the percentage of workers in South Lakeland who are self-employed is a massive 21.3%.

The only borough of London to make the Top 10 list was Barnet, where 18% of the working population are contractors. Overall, 11.9% of the workers in London are self-employed.

'Contractors now command higher than average incomes making contracting an appealing career choice. Earning above national average incomes means that contractors can pick and choose where to live in and that means they are clustering in some of the most desirable areas in the UK', said Kristian Gourlay, Director at the Professional Representation Network.

'The contracting market has matured in the last few years as the model offers flexibility to the contractor and the companies using their services. The more aware professionals become of contracting and its benefits more will opt for this as a career path.'
