Contractor numbers rise

06.02.14

The number of self-employed individuals in the UK has risen sharply, according to statistics released by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) last month.

In the three months of September, October and November, the number of self-employed workers in the country rose by 92,000, considerably higher than the 30,000 from the previous three months.

"The rise in self-employment is a long-term trend and is a positive feature of a flexible labour market," said David Kern, chief economist at the British Chambers of Commerce.

"What is important is that we are seeing a lot more people in full-time self-employment."
