Chris makes history
23.10.13
This summer, Consort Consultancy Services' in-house accountant Chris Mitchell made history by becoming the first ever rider to complete a race around the world-famous Isle of Man TT course with the use of only one arm.
Chris lost the use of his left arm in a motorcycle accident 12 years ago, but he's since realised his dream of racing motorbikes in his spare time.
He competed in the event last year but failed to complete a lap due to mechanical difficulties. This year, however, he finished 11th out of 20 riders in the Manx Grand Prix Newcomer's B race last Wednesday, with an average speed over 4 laps of 99.134mph (including a pit stop) around the 37.75-mile course.
The Suzuki bike he races has been modified to allow Chris to race – the machine is controlled fully on the right side, with help from Pro-Shift and Rekluse, and has special tank grips to keep him securely on-board.
"I've got special grips on the side of the tank which keep me stuck to the bike. I use my feet to steer, and I use my body to counter-steer," he told the BBC.
After the race, Chris said: "This is up there with having my first daughter born and getting married. This is a life time ambition."
He has since been featured on BBC, ESPN and talkSPORT.
