Chris Moyles used tax scheme

28.02.14

It was widely reported over the weekend that former Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles had been found guilty by tribunal of avoiding tax by claiming he had run up £1m worth of losses as a used car salesmen.

Mr Moyles was part of a scheme entitled 'Working Wheels', which is rumoured to have cost the UK £290million in lost revenue. He claimed he'd sold £3,800 worth of cars but had generated losses of £1m, which he was seeking to claim against his tax.

He took to Twitter on Friday to 'take full responsibility' and said he had 'learnt a valuable lesson'.

Moyles, who earned around £500,000 per year at the BBC, was one of approximately 450 individuals who were involved in the scheme.

"The BBC is not a party involved in this tribunal, and we understand that Chris Moyles has taken full responsibility for his tax arrangements, which are of course a matter for him and HMRC," said a BBC spokesperson.

Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs (HMRC) is now writing to the other celebrities and high-earners who were involved in the scheme to pay any outstanding tax.

Our services are completely transparent and we offer our contractors a simple service in which they can retain their self-employed status whilst receiving the benefits of subcontracting. Our processes and procedures have been developed following consultation with HMRC.
