BBC freelancers to become employed

20.02.14

Many faces of the BBC, including Jeremy Clarkson and Graham Norton, face losing 25 per cent of their income now that the BBC is attempting to force them onto the payroll.

Many professionals within the media work as freelancers due to multiple sources of income. It also allows them to reduce their taxable income by offsetting any work-related expenses from their gross income.

By only paying the freelancers when they need them, the BBC is actually saving money. However, now the BBC is looking at encouraging its freelancers onto its payroll, it has left many of them scratching their heads as the existing system benefits both the end client and the individual.

Currently over 6,000 professionals are paid this way by the BBC in order to cut costs and reap the rewards of a flexible and diverse workforce. All income generated as a self-employed contractor is taxable, but it allows you the ability to offset any work-related expenses against your gross income.

Being self-employed and in business on your own account is not just a choice of how you are paid, it's a way of life and involves a completely different mindset. Click here to find out more about Consort.
