Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR)

11.11.13

Any small businesses or individuals with unresolved tax disputes can use the services of HMRC's very own Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR).

ADR is the process of settling any tax disputes without going to court. For more details, click here.

Following a two-year trial period, HMRC officially embraced ADR in September, aiming to 'find a fair and quick outcome for both parties, helping to reduce their costs and avoid a tribunal'.

'I am delighted to announce that Alternative Dispute Resolution for small businesses and individuals has entered mainstream HMRC business,' said Richard Summersgill, HMRC Director of Local Compliance.

'We know that taxpayers like the speed and flexibility of Alternative Dispute Resolution, and evidence has shown that by using the simple service, many disputes can be significantly shortened and resolved without recourse to Tribunal.'

The scheme has been widely welcomed, and it is hoped that the number of cases resolved by ADR will increase. During the two-year trial period, 58% of the cases were fully resolved and 8% of the cases were partially resolved. The average length of an ADR case resolution was just 61 days.
