8.7m want flexible working

01.07.14

Research conducted by recruitment firm Timewise has shown that a huge 8.7million of British workers would like their work to be more flexible.

The study, entitled 'A flexible future for Britain?' displayed that almost two-fifths of workers would like to see more flexibility within their jobs. We've already seen that self-employment is on the rise, and one of the main reasons for this is the work/life balance that it allows, as opposed to full-time employment.

On Monday, UK workers were given the right to ask their employer if they can work more flexibly, perhaps indicating that the future of employment in the UK will be a lot more versatile.

Five hundred managers from different companies across the UK also took part in the survey, and 91 per cent of those revealed they were open to the idea of flexible working.

"I believe that the best businesses need to embrace flexible working, not only to keep attracting the best and brightest talent, but [also] genuinely because that's where we're heading as a working society," said Lynn Rattigan, the deputy chief operation officer for Ernst and Young.

The benefits of being a self-employed contractor are clear: you get to decide where and when you work, and you have the ability to negotiate your own fees. It is the freedom that's making many professionals switch to self-employment. Click here for more information about Consort.
