Cost of dying rises

27.09.13

A recent study claims that the average cost of dying has hit a record of £7,622 – a rise of 7.1% from the same study in 2012.

Since 2004, funeral costs alone have increased by around 80% - they now cost an average of £3,456. Add into the equation a headstone, probate and flowers and the cost of 'dying' becomes increasingly expensive.

The cost of dying is heavily determined by a 'postcode lottery', not surprisingly, the cost of dying in London is higher in comparison to other areas of the country. The average cost of dying in London is £9,556, compared to Wales where the average cost is a much more reasonable £6,096.

Dr. Kate Woodthorpe summed it up perfectly when she said: 'People need to realise that death is one of the few certainties in life and must be addressed ahead of time so that plans can be made with regard to who will pay for their funeral, and how.'
